UCLA Mock Trial had one of its best-ever invitational seasons during Fall and Winter of 2011-2012. Let's go over some of our accomplishments:
- We were able to field 40 members, expanding our roster to include five competitive teams.
- We debuted the very first Red Carpet Invitational Classic--a unique tournament with three judges per trial, a groundbreaking four-round challenge format, and a plethora of top-ranked teams in attendance.
- We also put on yet another successful UCLAssic tournament, providing a competitive venue for 34 teams from across the nation.
- We created a brand-new website.
We also had an extraordinarily successful competitive run: - At the Red Carpet Classic, our unstacked Fall teams took 4th and 6th Place. Roxana Guidero was honored as a nominee for Best Closer, as was Alexander Hill for Best Opener, Best Mocker and Most Versatile, Brandon Hughes for Most Versatile, Philip Mayer for Best Middler, Amanda Mundell for Best Mocker and Most Versatile, and Ben Pfenniger for Best Costume. Both teams were also nominated for the Spirit of AMTA Award.
- Our unstacked novice teams also made a splash at UC Irvine's Anteater Invitational, where they took 8th and 11th Place against varsity competitors. First-year competitor Natasha Laraway won her team's MVP Award with perfect ranks, as did returning member Dalia Wahab.
- Our unstacked varsity teams ended their season with a strong 3rd Place at UC Irvine's Beach Party tournament. Aside from one team tying for the Gonzalo Freixes Sportsmanship Award, Brandon Hughes won both an Outstanding Attorney and Outstanding Witness award. Megan Timpane also took home her first individual award for her work as an Outstanding Witness.
- After finally stacking 64, 65, 66, 67 and 68, we competed at the UCLAssic. We placed two of our teams in the top three--Team 964 took 2nd Place (without losing on a single ballot), and Team 965 took 3rd (losing only to the undefeated tournament champions from the University of Chicago). Team 968 was honored as the runner-up for the Class Act Award. Both James Caress and Amanda Mundell won Outstanding Attorney awards for their work on the prosecution, as did Brandon Hughes and Roxana Guidero on the defense. Megan Timpane and Natasha Laraway won their second Outstanding Witness awards in a row.
- Teams 966 and 968 attended the Santa Barbara Paradise Invitational. First-year Jack Meyer was given his first Outstanding Attorney award. Chelsey Dobbins won an Outstanding Witness award, as did Natasha Laraway (her third in a row).
- Returning national champions 964 proved that lightning can strike twice when they decisively won NYU's prestigious Downtown Invitational Classic. After winning 14 ballots during the preliminary rounds against the 2nd, 3rd and 5th Place teams from Harvard, the University of Virginia and UC Berkeley, 64 went on to decisively beat Harvard University in the tournament's final round, capturing 10 out of the 11 ballots. Iain Lampert was also honored as a Downtown All-Star Witness for being one of the best experts at the tournament.
- Teams 965 and 966 competed at the Rebel Trojan Invitational in Las Vegas. Team 965 took 4th Place, and Team 966 took 7th Place. First-year competitors Ida Nowakowska, Toni Heath and Natasha Laraway all won Outstanding Witness awards (the latter's fourth such award in a row). 965's captains Sarah Sherwood and Roxana Guidero both won Outstanding Attorney awards.
- Finally, Teams 964, 967 and 968 formed a spontaneously stacked hybrid team to compete at Berkeley's Joey Davis Memorial Tournament. This amalgam of competitors proved that talent trumps preparation when it took 3rd Place (only losing a single ballot by a single point). James Caress, Amanda Mundell, Brandon Hughes, and Connor Winn all received Outstanding Attorney awards, while Shayan Ebrahim (taking some time off from filming a mock-umentary about our team) received his first Outstanding Witness award.
